Though the recharge is necessary, the summer time can be leveraged to maximize your child’s potential and position them for success.
Here are ten activities that we suggest to make their Summer fun, but also a period of immense personal growth and development.
1. Volunteer in the Community

Your high-schooler can make a difference by volunteering at local shelters, summer schools, hospitals, or community centers. It’s a rewarding way to give back and gain valuable life experiences. Volunteering teaches empathy, responsibility, and community service, which are invaluable life skills. These can also be great for their college scholarship application.
2. Take Up a New Hobby

Whether it’s painting, playing an instrument, or learning to cook, summer is the perfect time to explore new interests and develop new skills. Engaging in hobbies can reduce stress, improve mental health, and boost their creativity.
3. Travel and Explore

Discover new places, cultures, and experiences by traveling. Even a road trip to a nearby city or town can be an exciting adventure. Traveling broadens their perspective, enhances cultural awareness, and creates lasting memories. Think of the expository essays they can write at school with these experiences.
4. Read for Fun

This one is definitely our “fave”. They can escape into the world of books. Reading not only enhances their knowledge but also improves language skills, writing skills and creativity. From fiction to non-fiction, the possibilities are endless, and the benefits are substantial.
5. Get a Summer Job or Internship

Gain work experience, learn new skills, and earn some extra money by taking up a part-time job or internship. It would be great to do this in a field that they are interested in pursuing. This not only builds their resume but also teaches responsibility, time management, the value of hard work and other life skills.
6. Engage in Physical Activities
Stay active by participating in sports, hiking, biking, or even just taking regular walks. Physical activity is crucial for a healthy body and mind, improving mood, energy levels, and overall well-being.
7. Attend a Summer School

Summer schools offer a great opportunity to prepare for the term ahead. This can be geared towards getting ahead and learning the new content like the one at Natken. You can also choose one for reviewing the previous content to ensure that the topics are properly understood. They can meet new people, develop new skills, and have fun in a structured environment.
8. Learn a New Language
Your high schooler can broaden their horizons by learning a new language. Online courses and language apps such as Duolingo make it easier than ever to start. Learning a language enhances cognitive skills, improves memory, and opens up new cultural understandings.
9. Prepare for College

Summer time can be used to visit colleges, joining their summer immersion camps and dabbling in their areas of interest. Imagine your child, attending the Summer program at Yale or Harvard and being motivated enough to start working towards attending that university. It’s never too early to start planning for their future. Early preparation reduces stress and increases their chances of getting into the desired college.
10. Relax and Recharge

Don’t forget, this is also super important. They need to take time to relax and enjoy some downtime. Give them time to recharge their batteries for the upcoming school year. Balance is key to maintaining good mental health and staying motivated.
